Sign Language Interpreters

What is an Interpreter?

Sign Language/spoken English interpreters are highly skilled professionals that facilitate communication between hearing individuals and the Deaf or hard-of-hearing. They are a crucial communication tool utilized by all people involved in a communication setting. Interpreters must be able to listen to another person’s words, inflections and intent and simultaneously render them into the visual language of signs using the mode of communication preferred by the deaf consumer. The interpreter must also be able to comprehend the signs, inflections and intent of the deaf consumer and simultaneously speak them in articulate, appropriate English. They must understand the cultures in which they work and apply that knowledge to promote effective cross-cultural communications. JCCD employs and contracts with qualified interpreters, in accordance with Alabama Licensure Board of Interpreters & Transliterators (ALBIT), to ensure consumer needs are met.

Am I Required to Provide Interpreter Services?

Interpreter services are needed for hearing and deaf people to communicate. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 are two landmark legislations outlining equal access for people with disabilities, including employment, education and community settings. Additionally, Alabama passed the Alabama Interpreter Licensure Law requiring interpreters to obtain a permit or license.

How Do I Access an Interpreter?

Interpreter services can be scheduled by calling the Janice Capilouto Center for the Deaf. Ask to schedule an interpreter and you will be connected with the appropriate staff. Requests should be made as far in advance as possible, due to the limited number of qualified interpreters available

All of our interpreters are licensed or permitted through the Alabama Board of Interpreters and Transliterators. To inquire about the costs of hiring an interpreter, please contact JCCD at 334-288-0240x204
